Psychological Assessments - What They Are and What They Offer

A psychological assessment is a structured process in which a trained psychologist gathers, interprets, and integrates information about a person’s thinking, emotions, behaviour, personality, abilities, functioning, and mental health — using clinical interviews, questionnaires, observations, and standardized tests.

Assessments are designed to answer specific questions about a person and often include clarification of relevant diagnoses, a person’s level of functioning, and recommended next steps and treatments.

What Psychological Assessments Can Address

Mental health diagnosis clarification (e.g. ADHD, anxiety, depression, personality disorders)

Learning disabilities and psychoeducational needs (e.g. academic strengths and weaknesses)

Cognitive concerns involving memory, attention, or problem-solving

Personality and emotional functioning

Supporting educational, workplace, disability, or legal decisions

Who Should Consider a Psychological Assessment?

In general, a psychological assessment is recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about themselves. More specifically, assessments are especially helpful for individuals who:

01

Require mental health medications — a formal diagnosis helps guide prescribing clinicians

02

Need school or workplace accommodations to ensure success

03

Have been psychologically injured and require documentation for funding or legal purposes

04

Have noticed a change in their functioning and want to understand what is happening

05

Have received conflicting or unclear diagnoses in the past

06

Are seeking to better understand their cognitive, emotional, or relational patterns
