Psychological Assessments - What They Are and What They Offer
A psychological assessment is a structured process in which a trained psychologist gathers, interprets, and integrates information about a person’s thinking, emotions, behaviour, personality, abilities, functioning, and mental health — using clinical interviews, questionnaires, observations, and standardized tests.
Assessments are designed to answer specific questions about a person and often include clarification of relevant diagnoses, a person’s level of functioning, and recommended next steps and treatments.
What Psychological Assessments Can Address
Mental health diagnosis clarification (e.g. ADHD, anxiety, depression, personality disorders)
Learning disabilities and psychoeducational needs (e.g. academic strengths and weaknesses)
Cognitive concerns involving memory, attention, or problem-solving
Personality and emotional functioning
Supporting educational, workplace, disability, or legal decisions
Who Should Consider a Psychological Assessment?
In general, a psychological assessment is recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about themselves. More specifically, assessments are especially helpful for individuals who:
01
Require mental health medications — a formal diagnosis helps guide prescribing clinicians
02
Need school or workplace accommodations to ensure success
03
Have been psychologically injured and require documentation for funding or legal purposes
04
Have noticed a change in their functioning and want to understand what is happening
05
Have received conflicting or unclear diagnoses in the past
06
Are seeking to better understand their cognitive, emotional, or relational patterns

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long does a psychological assessment take?
This depends on the type and scope of assessment. A focused ADHD assessment may require 2–4 sessions; a comprehensive psychoeducational or mental health assessment may take longer. Your clinician will discuss the expected timeline and number of sessions at your consultation.
What happens after I receive my psychological assessment?
You will receive a comprehensive written report detailing test results, findings, relevant diagnoses, and recommendations. You will also meet with your clinician for a debrief session to review the report together and discuss your next steps.
Can a psychological assessment at CDMH help me access accommodations at school or work?
Yes. A formal psychological assessment report from a registered psychologist is typically required to access academic accommodations (e.g. extended time on exams) or workplace accommodations under human rights legislation.
Who conducts psychological assessments at CDMH?
CDMH assessments are conducted by clinicians with assessment training and experience, including by Dr. Milann Mitchell (Psy.D.), who has extensive experience with ADHD, psychoeducational, and mental health assessments for teens and adults.
Will my insurance cover a psychological assessment?
Coverage varies by plan and assessment type. Many extended health benefits include psychological assessment coverage. Contact your insurance provider and CDMH directly to explore options and direct billing availability.
Is a referral needed to access a psychological assessment at CDMH?
No referral is required. You can contact CDMH directly to book a free consultation and discuss whether a psychological assessment is the right next step for you.
